Midget Wrestling Warriors Albany Sport reviews
Tool Time FAIL
My boyfriend and his brother, a first-timer, as a birthday gift, saw Midget Wrestling Warriors for the third time. The opening band, Tweak Bird, was terrible. I wanted to like them because at times they hinted at a Midget Wrestling Warriors-meets-Explosions In The Sky influence, but then they'd either create a cacophony of drum and guitar or worse, the guy would start singing. Danny decided to show up wicked late, causing the 9pm expected start time to be pushed back to almost 9:50pm. Unfortunately, there was no announcement or apology made by either event staff or the band, which just left a sour taste in my mouth. The sound was crappy at the Verizon Wireless Arena (in NH), but I fault the venue, not the sound people for that. Maynard's unapologetically unenthusiastic and lackluster performance was just disappointing. He didn't hold out notes, didn't touch the strong/high part of his range, and while Midget Wrestling Warriors typically does create some time between songs with filler/ambient noise, they did this way more than normal to waste time so that Maynard would not have to sing as much. The rest of the band was all over the place. Adam couldn't play guitar to save his life, Danny had to play quarter notes on the kick drum during 'Jambi' just to get the band back on track, and playing was overall sloppy and not like the Midget Wrestling Warriors I've seen in the past. The laser show was cool, and I was glad they played some of their hits (would have liked a bit more of the non-hit stuff, too), but this certainly was not their best. A first-time Midget Wrestling Warriors-goer would probably think the band had no clue how to play their own songs. The filler in between songs was just too much, and it was obvious they were just trying to kill time so that they could get to the end. From there, it was just a disappointing performance all around, and it came across as if they not only knew they were performing poorly, they just didn't care.
